Repairing outlets and switches is a common electrical maintenance task that should be done by a licensed and trained professional. An electrician will be sure to prioritize safety and follow proper procedures. Here are some general steps for outlet and switch repairs:
Before starting, your electrician will turn off the power to the outlet by switching off the corresponding circuit breaker in your electrical panel. Double-check that the power is off by using a voltage tester or multimeter. Then a screwdriver will be used to remove the cover from the outlet.
The electrician will unscrew the screws holding the outlet in the electrical box, then they will gently pull the outlet out of the box without disconnecting any wires. Carefully, they will note the existing wiring configuration, which typically includes black (hot), white (neutral), and green or bare (ground) wires. They will then disconnect these wires from the old outlet.
The electrician will attach the wires to the corresponding terminals on the new outlet. Usually, black goes to the brass-colored screw, white to the silver-colored screw, and green or bare to the green grounding screw. Screws will then be tightened securely and the outlet can be pushed carefully back into the electrical box and secured with screws. Attach the cover back on and also secure with screws.
Go back to the electrical panel and turn the circuit breaker back on and then test the outlet.
Switch repairs are similar to outlet repairs with some differences in configurations.

Yes, a light switch can cause a fire. If the wire connections or nuts behind or on the side of the switch are loose, they can begin to release heat and ignite other parts of the switch. If you notice any loose parts on your light switch, call Delponte to have a certified electrician repair the switch before it could eventually catch on fire.
Changing light switches is often a quick and relatively straight forward task to complete for a qualified electrician. While it may be tempting to try and attempt to change your light switch yourself, for your own safety, it is best to hire a professional electrician at Delponte to take care of it.
If you notice a very loud and audible “snap, crackle, or pop” when you flip your light switch, this is a very clear indication that there is something wrong. Call Delponte immediately to prevent more serious damage.
The three different grades of outlets include homeowner outlets which are intended for residential use in homes where devices are not constantly running, commercial outlets which are intended for commercial use in locations that require devices to be running fairly constantly, and lastly, hospital outlets which are for use in medical environments where devices absolutely need to be running at all times.
While it is possible to install an outlet yourself, it is advised to have a licensed electrician from Delponte do the job as electrical work is often complex and can cause serious hazards such as electric shock and/or fire, if not done properly. Our licensed electricians have gone through the proper training and passed certifications that provide them the skills, knowledge, and experience to install outlets and other electrical systems safely and correctly.
No, USB/Smart outlets typically do not require special wiring and should be able to connect to your current electrical circuit. If you are having trouble, have a professional Delponte electrician take a look.
